The Garden consists of an exquisite Victorian Castle set within 50 acres of ornamental grounds. The Architect Daniel Robertson designed both Johnstown Castle Gardens and Powerscourt Gardens.  The Grounds contain a wide variety of trees and shrubs representing the best aspects of a formal and wild garden.  The Grounds are greatly enchanced by two lakes with folly towers and are populated by a wide range of waterfowl. The Irish Agricultural Museum and Peacock Tearoom are located within the grounds.  Unfortunately the Castle is not open to the public.

Newtownbarry House is surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens and a large pond adjacent to the entrance of the house. You can follow the tour from the lake to the Rose Garden and then onto the newly restored 19th Century Sunken Garden

The lake, situated to the northwest is at the front of Newtownbarry House and was was designed and made in the 19th Century however, it was destroyed when a stream broke its banks in the 1950's. It was restored fin 2004 by a gentleman named Mickey Dunne. The whole area was covered with sally trees. He restored the walls and re-built the waterfall. You can look down from the house through the laurels to the lake.

The beginning of the flowering season in the Rose Garden (previously a tennis court) starts with the magnificent magnolia tree which flowers profusely in March and April. The ornate rose beds in the centre of this garden produce their blooms in late May and early June. Box hedging surrounds the flowerbeds. The herbaceous border and shrub beds on the outer edge of this garden are full of a variety of colour and scents all year long. The whole garden is all of eight years old and was designed by Frances & Iain McDonald (The Bay Garden Camolin). The Rose Garden is situated at the east of the house.

The trees and foundations for the Sunken Garden are older than the present huse. They were probably planted when the 18th Century house Woodfield existed on the present site of Newtownbarry House. The Hall-Dares added to these gardens when they built Newtownbarry House. The Sunken Garden is 18th Century with 19th Century additions. It was resored in 2004. Features include the pond and beautiful stone grotto arches, it features a red border on either side of a gravel path around the pond. There is lovely planting in the Sunken Garden including four large beds which were designed by Imogen Stafford.

N.B. The Sunken Garden is much larger andn more spectacular that the Rose Garden

The Bay Garden consists of an array of garden "rooms" each with its own distinct style, The Cottage Garden, The Serpetine Garden, The Rose Garden, The Hor Border, The Funeral  Border, The Pool Garden, The Barn Garden and The Woodland Garden.  Created by Frances and Iain McDonald when they moved to Camoling in 1989 to a neglected orchard full of trees and wild cherry which has today through excellent design, careful planning and great knowledge turned Bay Garden into a veritable feast for the senses.
